A lot of crashes happen before the board has done anything wrong. The rider spots a gap in traffic, leans in too hard, hits a patch of rough tarmac, then realises too late that electric skateboards accelerate and brake very differently from a push board. So, are electric skateboards dangerous? Yes, they can be. But the honest answer from a rider-run workshop is that the danger depends less on the headline and more on the board, the setup, the conditions, and the person standing on it.
That matters because electric skateboards get judged in extremes. Some people treat them like toys. Others talk about them like they are automatically death traps. Neither view is useful. If you actually ride, service, and repair these boards, the picture is more specific than that.
Are electric skateboards dangerous compared with regular skateboards?
They can be more dangerous in a few clear ways. Speed is the obvious one. A regular skateboard usually tops out at whatever your legs, hill, and nerve allow. An electric board can get there fast, hold speed longer, and keep pulling when a new rider is already out of their comfort zone. That changes the consequences of mistakes.
The second difference is braking. On a normal skateboard, slowing down is something you physically control through carving, foot braking, or stepping off. On an electric board, braking comes through the motor and remote. When it works well, it is one of the best safety features you have. When a rider panics, grabs too much brake, or rides beyond the grip available, it can throw them off just as quickly as too much throttle.
Then there is weight. Electric skateboards are heavier than standard decks, often by a fair margin. That extra mass helps with stability at speed, but it also means more momentum in a crash and less chance of casually bailing out and catching the board before it disappears under a parked car or into the road.
That said, electric boards are not automatically less safe than every non-electric setup. A stable, well-built street or all-terrain electric board ridden sensibly on known routes can be safer than a twitchy traditional board being bombed down a hill by someone with no speed checks. Risk is real, but context matters.
What actually makes an electric skateboard risky?
Most of the real danger comes from a stack of smaller factors rather than one dramatic failure. Speed magnifies everything. Small potholes feel bigger. Steering inputs become sharper. Stopping distances stretch out. A route that felt easy at 12 mph can become sketchy at 22.
Tyres and wheels matter more than newer riders expect. Urethane wheels can feel brilliant on smooth ground but harsh and unforgiving on rough surfaces. Pneumatic tyres add comfort and grip, especially on poor roads, but they still do not cancel out bad line choice or overconfidence. If your local route is full of cracked cycle lanes, drain covers, wet leaves, and broken edges, the board setup needs to match that.
Maintenance is another big one. Loose trucks, worn tyres, damaged bearings, split enclosures, weak belts, tired battery packs, and remote issues all increase risk. Plenty of riders assume safety starts and ends with a helmet, then ignore the hardware under their feet. In reality, neglected equipment is one of the quickest ways to turn a normal ride into a workshop job - or an A&E visit.
Rider behaviour is the part no spec sheet fixes. A powerful board in the hands of someone who respects braking distance, checks their kit, and reads the road is one thing. The same board under a rider weaving through traffic in trainers with no gloves, no lights, and no plan is another.
The most common electric skateboard accidents
In workshop conversations, the same patterns come up again and again. New riders often crash during acceleration because they stand too upright and let the board shoot out ahead of them. Braking crashes are just as common. They see an obstacle, panic, over-brake, and get pitched forward.
Speed wobble is another classic. It usually starts with poor stance, trucks set badly for the rider, or simply going faster than their skill level supports. Sometimes the board gets blamed when the real issue is a setup that was never adjusted after unboxing.
Surface-related crashes are everywhere in the UK. Wet paint, gravel, sunken drain covers, rough tarmac, broken paving at crossings, and potholes all catch people out. Electric skateboards do not forgive poor road surfaces in the same way a bike with larger tyres might.
Mechanical issues do happen, but less often than people assume if the board is decent and properly maintained. The internet loves a dramatic failure story, but day to day, more riders get hurt from misjudging terrain and speed than from catastrophic hardware faults.
Who is most at risk?
Beginners are the obvious group, especially those who buy based on top speed rather than control. A board with serious power can be manageable for an experienced rider and completely wrong for someone who has never used a remote throttle before.
Riders upgrading too quickly are another risk category. Going from a mellow entry-level setup to a very powerful carbon board without adjusting your habits is where people get caught out. The board feels planted, so confidence rises before skill does.
Commuters can also underestimate risk because familiarity breeds laziness. The route to work starts feeling routine, and that is when people stop checking tyre pressure, stop scanning the road ahead properly, or decide to ride in bad weather because they have done it before.
Then there are riders on poorly supported kit. Cheap boards with weak waterproofing claims, inconsistent brakes, low-grade battery packs, or no realistic parts backup can become dangerous not because all budget gear is useless, but because safety depends on reliability and serviceability over time.
How to make electric skateboards safer
The safest riders are not always the slowest riders. Usually, they are the ones who are systematic. They wear proper protective gear, they understand their board, and they do not treat every ride like a top-speed test.
A full-face helmet is not overkill if you ride at meaningful speed. At minimum, most riders should be in a certified helmet, gloves, and pads suited to how and where they ride. Wrist injuries are common. So are shoulder and hip impacts. The ground does not care whether you were only going to the shops.
Board choice matters. Deck shape, wheel type, drivetrain, braking feel, and overall stability all affect safety. So does setup. Truck tension should match rider weight, stance, and speed. Brakes should be tested before every ride, not trusted blindly because they worked yesterday.
Practice should happen somewhere boring. Empty car parks and smooth open spaces are ideal because they let you learn throttle control, braking, carving, and emergency dismounts without traffic pressure. A rider who has rehearsed stopping properly is far safer than one who has spent all their time chasing speed.
Maintenance needs to be routine, not reactive. Check hardware, battery condition, enclosure seals, wheel wear, belts if fitted, and tyre pressure if you run pneumatics. If something feels off, odd vibration, delayed brake response, strange noises, reduced range, sort it before your next ride. This is exactly why specialist service support matters. Are electric skateboards dangerous in wet British conditions?
Yes, more so. Even boards with decent water resistance are still dealing with less grip, poorer visibility, longer braking distances, and more contaminated road surfaces. Wet leaves, painted junctions, metal covers, and greasy city roads are bad news on any small-wheeled setup.
The battery and electronics side matters too, but traction is usually the more immediate problem. Riders often focus on whether a board can survive a bit of drizzle when the better question is whether they can safely stop and turn on the surface in front of them.
If you ride in London or any other busy urban area, poor weather compounds everything. Pedestrians are less predictable, drivers see less, and road edges get messier. Sometimes the safest call is simply not to ride that day.
So, should you be worried?
You should be realistic. Electric skateboards are not harmless, and anyone pretending otherwise is selling fantasy. But they are also not uniquely reckless when matched with the right rider, the right setup, and proper maintenance.
A well-made board with predictable brakes, sensible speed management, decent protective gear, and regular servicing is a very different proposition from a neglected board ridden flat out by someone learning on public roads. If you respect the machine, build skill gradually, and keep the hardware in good order, the risk becomes manageable rather than random.
The best mindset is simple: treat your board like real transport, not a toy, and it will usually tell you what it needs before it lets you down.
