How to Maintain Battery Health on Your PEV

Your battery is the most expensive consumable component on most electric skateboards and e-bikes. Treat it well and it will deliver reliable range for years; neglect it and reduced range, voltage sag and expensive replacement can arrive far sooner than expected. Knowing how to maintain battery health is less about chasing a perfect charging routine and more about avoiding the handful of conditions lithium-ion packs genuinely dislike.

How to maintain battery health on electric skateboards and e-bikes

Most PEV batteries use lithium-ion cells managed by a battery management system, or BMS. The BMS protects the pack from problems such as over-charge, over-discharge and excessive current, but it cannot reverse wear caused by heat, poor storage or repeatedly running a battery flat.

The practical target is simple: keep the pack in a comfortable charge range where possible, keep it dry and cool, use suitable charging equipment, and respond early if its behaviour changes. You do not need to obsess over every percentage point before every ride. You do need habits that suit how you actually ride.

Avoid living at the extremes

A lithium-ion battery is under the most stress when it is held fully charged or deeply discharged. For everyday commuting, short rides and workshop testing, charging to roughly 80 to 90% is easier on the cells than leaving the pack at 100% for days. Likewise, aim to recharge before the battery is genuinely empty rather than regularly riding until the board or bike shuts down.

That does not mean you should never charge fully. A long ride, a group skate, or a commute where range matters is exactly what full capacity is for. Charge to 100% close to departure, ride it, then avoid parking it fully charged for the rest of the week. The trade-off is straightforward: maximum range today versus marginally less long-term battery wear.

Electric skateboard riders should be especially cautious near the low end of the pack. Hard acceleration on a low battery can cause noticeable voltage sag, particularly in cold weather or on a high-performance set-up. Your display may show enough charge to get home, but the voltage can dip under load and trigger a cut-out before the percentage suggests it should.

Charge with the right kit, on the right surface

Use the charger supplied with your PEV or a compatible replacement with the correct voltage, connector and charge profile. A connector that happens to fit is not proof that a charger is suitable. Incorrect chargers can damage the BMS, overheat components or create a serious fire risk.

Charge on a hard, non-flammable surface in a dry, ventilated area. Keep the charger and battery away from direct sun, radiators, clutter and anything that could trap heat. Charging on a bed, sofa, carpet pile or inside a packed bag is poor practice because heat cannot dissipate properly.

Stay nearby while charging where possible. You do not need to stare at the charger for hours, but avoid leaving a battery on charge overnight or while the property is empty. Once it is charged, unplug it. Modern chargers and BMS systems have protections, yet there is no upside to leaving any charging system connected longer than necessary.

If your charger cable, plug or battery port is loose, bent, scorched, corroded or unusually hot, stop using it until it has been checked. A healthy charger may become warm during use. It should not become too hot to touch, smell burnt or make crackling noises.

Temperature matters more than most riders think

Heat speeds up battery ageing. Leaving an e-bike in a hot conservatory, an electric skateboard in the boot of a car during summer, or any PEV in direct sunlight is an easy way to reduce battery life without putting in a single mile.

Cold has a different effect. It temporarily reduces available range and makes voltage sag more likely, rather than permanently harming a healthy pack on its own. Start more gently on winter rides, expect fewer miles, and avoid demanding full power immediately after taking a board or bike out of a cold shed.

Never charge a battery that is freezing cold. Bring it indoors and allow it to reach room temperature first. The same applies after an intense ride: if the pack is hot from sustained climbing, fast riding or a warm day, let it cool before plugging in. Charging a battery while it is too hot or too cold puts unnecessary strain on the cells.

Store the battery for the ride after next

Storage is where many otherwise good batteries lose capacity. If you will not use your PEV for more than a couple of weeks, leave the battery around 40 to 60% charge rather than full or nearly empty. Check it every month or so and top it up if it has dropped significantly.

Store the PEV in a dry location at a stable, moderate temperature. Indoors is usually best. A damp garage, unheated shed or outdoor cupboard can expose it to condensation, temperature swings and corrosion around connectors. If an e-bike has a removable battery, take it indoors rather than leaving it on the bike through a cold spell.

For electric skateboards, do not forget the remote. Its smaller lithium battery also dislikes being left dead for months. Give it a partial charge before long-term storage and check it occasionally.

Ride in a way that reduces unnecessary strain

Hard riding is part of why many of us own PEVs, and a battery should be used. But repeated maximum-current launches, steep hill climbs at low charge and full-throttle runs in freezing conditions are harder on a pack than steady riding. This matters more with smaller batteries, heavy riders, pneumatic tyre set-ups and high-output upgrades.

Regenerative braking needs a little awareness too. If a battery is completely full, it has limited room to accept energy recovered while braking. On a steep downhill immediately after a 100% charge, some boards and bikes may reduce regen or behave differently to protect the pack. If your route starts with a major descent, consider not charging right to the top unless you need the range.

Correct tyre pressure helps more than handling and puncture resistance. Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance, which means the motor draws more current for the same journey. Keep tyres within the manufacturer’s stated range, while adjusting sensibly for rider weight, terrain and grip.

Keep water and impact away from the pack

Water resistance is not waterproofing. Riding through shallow puddles may be fine for a particular model, but deep standing water, pressure washing and wet storage are risks no battery pack needs. Water can enter charging ports, deck enclosures, cable glands and connectors, then cause corrosion long after the ride seems uneventful.

After a wet ride, wipe down the PEV and allow it to dry fully before charging. Inspect the charge port cap and connector for moisture or grit. Do not insert a charger into a wet port, and do not use a heat gun or radiator to force-dry a battery.

Impact deserves the same caution. A kerb strike, crash, dropped e-bike battery or underside scrape can damage a cell group or crush insulation inside the pack even if the outer case looks mostly fine. Stop riding and arrange a professional inspection if the enclosure is cracked, swollen, punctured or unusually warm.

Know when battery behaviour is not normal

Range naturally drops over time, and cold weather can make a healthy pack feel disappointing. What should prompt action is a sudden change: a large range loss over a few rides, charging that stops unexpectedly, a charger that stays green when the pack is low, erratic percentage readings, repeated cut-outs, swelling, or a chemical or burning smell.

Do not open a battery pack to investigate unless you are trained and equipped to work safely with high-energy lithium cells. Tape, heat-shrink and a replacement connector are not a safe fix for internal battery damage.
