A £299 board on a marketplace and a £1,500 board from a specialist can look oddly similar in photos. Then you ride them back to back and the price gap starts to make a lot more sense. Why are electric skateboards so expensive in the first place?
The biggest reason is that electric skateboards are low-volume, specialist machines. They sit somewhere between consumer electronics, power tools and performance sports equipment. That means the parts inside them need to handle vibration, weather, heat, impact and repeated high current loads, all while staying compact enough to fit under a deck you can actually ride.
Unlike a mass-market phone or laptop, electric skateboards are built for a much smaller audience. Brands do not get the same economies of scale, so the cost of development, testing, tooling, spares and warranty support gets spread across far fewer units. That alone pushes prices up before you even get into the quality of the actual hardware.
There is also a basic reality riders notice quickly - when a board is cheap, corners have usually been cut somewhere. Sometimes it is the battery, sometimes the electronics enclosure, sometimes the trucks and bushings, and sometimes the after-sales support is effectively non-existent.
The battery is a huge chunk of the price
If one part explains the cost better than anything else, it is the battery pack. A decent electric skateboard battery is expensive because it needs to do several jobs at once. It has to store enough energy for useful range, deliver enough current for acceleration and hill climbing, and do both safely.
Good packs use branded cells, sensible pack design and a proper battery management system. Those things matter because poor-quality cells sag under load, run hotter, age faster and can become a safety risk. Better cells cost more, and so does the labour involved in building and testing a pack properly.
Battery packs also take a beating. Every rough road, dropped kerb and wet commute adds stress. A cheap battery might look fine on day one, but if the voltage drops badly under load or range falls off after a short period, the low ticket price stops looking like a bargain.
Range claims are another place where price differences show up. A board that can genuinely deliver consistent real-world mileage, rather than a best-case figure on smooth tarmac with a light rider, usually has a battery pack big enough and capable enough to justify the cost.
Motors and speed controllers are not simple bolt-ons
A lot of buyers focus on top speed, but the expensive part is not just making a board go fast. It is making it accelerate cleanly, brake predictably and stay controllable when the road surface is poor.
The motors themselves need to be efficient and durable. Hub motors and belt-drive systems each have trade-offs, but whichever route a brand takes, proper motor performance costs money. Then there is the ESC, or electronic speed controller, which is basically the brain that manages acceleration, braking and power delivery.
A cheap ESC can make a board feel jerky, weak off the line or inconsistent when braking downhill. A better ESC gives smoother throttle response, more confidence under braking and a ride that feels sorted rather than sketchy. That is not flashy marketing stuff. It is the difference between a board that feels planted and one that keeps you guessing.
Decks, trucks and wheels matter more than many new riders expect
People new to the category sometimes assume the electric parts are the whole story. They are not. The non-electric hardware has a major effect on ride quality, reliability and safety.
A good deck needs the right flex, shape and strength for the board's weight and power. Trucks need to be stable at speed and predictable in turns. Wheels need grip, comfort and enough quality to cope with repeated torque and braking forces. These are not decorative parts. They are core to whether the board actually rides well.
This is one reason premium boards often cost more than they seem to on paper. Two boards may have similar quoted speed and range, but one has better geometry, better urethane, better bearings and better overall setup. Riders feel that immediately, especially on British roads that are rarely as smooth as product photos suggest.
Weather resistance and build quality add real cost
Electric skateboards live a hard life. Road vibration loosens fixings, water finds weak points, grit gets everywhere and impacts are inevitable. Building a board that copes with regular use means better enclosures, proper sealing, tougher connectors and more attention to cable routing and assembly.
That sort of build quality is expensive because it takes time, better materials and more quality control. It is far cheaper for a seller to ship a board with basic sealing and hope for the best than it is to design for real use and support the product properly after sale.
For UK riders, this matters even more. Damp conditions, dirty roads and mixed surfaces will expose a weak board quickly. A model that survives occasional drizzle, rough cycle lanes and daily commuting usually costs more because it has been built for that reality.
Why are electric skateboards so expensive compared with normal skateboards?
Because they are not really an upgraded skateboard in the usual sense. They are a moving electrical system with high discharge batteries, motor control electronics, remote communication, charging hardware and mechanical components that all need to work together without failure.
A standard skateboard can be brilliant in its own right, but it is mechanically simple. If something wears out, replacement is usually straightforward and relatively cheap. An electric skateboard has many more failure points, more specialist parts and a much higher support burden.
That support burden is part of the cost buyers often overlook. If something goes wrong, you do not just need a generic customer service inbox. You need access to diagnostics, replacement parts, repairs and someone who understands the platform. That is one reason buying from a rider-run specialist tends to cost more than buying from a random box-shifter online.
Research, testing and warranty are built into the price
Reputable brands spend money on development that customers never directly see. They test battery performance, ESC tuning, enclosure design, truck stability and firmware behaviour. They deal with failed parts, returns and warranty claims, and they keep spares on hand for future support.
None of that is free. When a board comes from a proper brand with a real service route behind it, part of the price is paying for the fact that someone has thought beyond the checkout page.
That matters even more once you have owned a board for a while. Tyres wear, belts need replacing, remotes get damaged, chargers fail and bearings need attention. A cheap seller might be cheaper at the start, but if there are no parts, no workshop support and no sensible warranty process, the real cost can be higher.
Shipping, regulation and specialist retail all push prices up
Large lithium batteries are expensive to ship, handle and store. There are regulations around transport, safety and compliance, and they add cost throughout the supply chain. Retailers that actually hold stock, inspect products and support customers after purchase have overheads that fly-by-night sellers do not.
Then there is the workshop side. Real service support means technicians, tools, diagnostics, spare parts inventory and time. For riders in and around London especially, having somewhere that can actually inspect a fault, fit parts or sort a repair is part of the value, not an optional extra.
Expensive does not always mean overpriced
Some boards are overpriced, and brand tax is definitely real in parts of the PEV market. But many premium electric skateboards are expensive for reasons that stand up under scrutiny. Better cells, better electronics, better ride feel and proper support all cost money.
The better question is not simply whether a board is expensive. It is whether the price matches the parts quality, the ride, the reliability and the after-sales backup. A commuter doing daily miles has different needs from a weekend rider who wants occasional fun. A lighter rider on flat routes might not need the same battery and power setup as someone heavier riding hills every day. It depends on how you ride, where you ride and how much downtime you can tolerate.
If you are comparing boards, look past the headline speed and range figures. Ask what cells are inside, what service support exists, whether spare parts are available and how the board behaves under braking and load. Those are the details that separate a board that feels expensive from one that actually earns its price.
A good electric skateboard should cost enough to do the job properly. If the price still stings, that is fair - but replacing a bad board, chasing missing parts and dealing with unreliable brakes usually costs more in the long run.
