A cheap board can look convincing in a product photo, then reveal its limits on the first wet commute, steep hill or pothole-ridden cycle route. A good electric skateboard buying guide starts with the riding you will actually do, not the highest speed or biggest range figure on the page.
The right board should feel predictable under your feet, have enough real-world range for your routes, and be backed by parts and people who can keep it moving. That matters just as much for a first board as it does when stepping up to a premium setup.
Electric skateboard buying guide: start with your ride
Before comparing specifications, be honest about where and how often you will ride. A compact board for short, smooth urban trips is a different purchase from an all-terrain board for rough towpaths, park paths and longer weekend sessions.
Think about distance first. If your regular journey is 5 miles each way, do not buy a board advertised for 10 miles and assume that is enough. Manufacturer range figures are normally achieved in favourable conditions with a lighter rider, smooth ground, moderate speed and a full battery. Hills, cold weather, tyre pressure, rider weight and hard acceleration all reduce that number.
A sensible rule is to choose a board with comfortably more claimed range than your normal round trip. That gives you a buffer for battery ageing, detours and the days when you want to ride rather than watch the battery indicator.
Also consider what happens at either end of the journey. Can you carry the board up stairs? Is there somewhere safe to charge it? Will you need to take it on public transport, where size, weight and local operator rules can make a larger board impractical? A 15 kg board may be manageable for a short lift, but it is a different proposition after a long day.
UK riding rules are part of the decision
Check the current rules before planning any route. Electric skateboards are not treated in the same way as bicycles in UK law, and their use on public roads, pavements and many public spaces can be restricted. Riding on private land with the landowner's permission is generally the straightforward use case, but riders should check the latest local and national guidance for themselves.
That does not make board choice less relevant. It means you should buy for the places you can lawfully and safely ride, rather than buying around a commuting fantasy that may not match the rules where you live.
Choose the drivetrain for the terrain
Motor type affects acceleration, hill climbing, braking feel, maintenance and ride character. There is no single winner.
Hub motors sit inside the rear wheels. They are usually quieter, cleaner-looking and often need less routine attention because there are no belts to tension or pulleys to change. They can make a good choice for smoother, flatter riding and riders who want a simple setup. The trade-off is that hub motor wheels often have less urethane than conventional skateboard wheels, so the ride can feel harsher on broken tarmac.
Belt-drive boards use external motors, belts and pulleys. They are popular with riders who want stronger low-speed torque, more wheel options and a more tunable setup. You can usually fit larger or softer wheels more easily, which is useful for rougher London surfaces. Belts are consumable parts, though. They need inspection, correct tension and eventual replacement.
Gear-drive systems aim to offer much of the torque and wheel flexibility of belt drive with fewer exposed moving parts. They are often quieter and lower-maintenance than belts, but may cost more and can be brand-specific when parts are needed.
For steep hills, heavier riders or riders who enjoy quick acceleration, torque matters more than a headline top speed. A board that accelerates and brakes progressively is more useful than one with an impressive number on its specification sheet but an abrupt power delivery.
Battery range is not just a number
The battery is the most expensive component in most electric skateboards, and it deserves more attention than the deck graphic or remote design. Look beyond watt-hours if the retailer provides detail. Cell quality, battery management system design, enclosure protection and charger quality all contribute to reliability and safety.
Charging should be straightforward, but not careless. Use the supplied or approved charger, charge on a non-flammable surface, avoid charging a damaged pack, and let a board cool after a hard ride before plugging it in. Do not store a battery fully flat for long periods. If you are putting the board away for weeks, a partial charge is generally kinder to the pack than leaving it empty or permanently at 100 per cent.
Cold weather is another real-world factor. Range drops when temperatures fall, and a cold battery should not be charged immediately after being brought in from outside. Let it return to room temperature first.
Ask a practical question before buying: if the battery, charger or battery management system develops a fault, can you get proper diagnostics and replacement support? The answer separates a board you can keep for years from one that becomes e-waste after a single unavailable part.
Wheels, tyres and deck shape decide comfort
Small, hard wheels feel lively on smooth ground but transmit every crack and rough patch through your legs. Larger urethane wheels roll better over uneven tarmac and tend to improve comfort, although they can alter gearing, clearance and acceleration. Pneumatic tyres offer the most comfort and grip over poor surfaces, gravel and light off-road terrain, but introduce puncture risk, tyre pressure checks and more rolling resistance.
For most urban riders, a street board with quality, larger-diameter urethane wheels is often the sensible middle ground. It stays relatively portable while taking the edge off the surface quality that catches new riders out.
Deck shape matters too. A flexible deck can absorb vibration and feel comfortable over distance, while a stiffer deck can feel more direct and stable at speed. Drop-through and low-rider decks lower your centre of gravity, making pushing and stopping easier, but some riders prefer the clearance and responsive feel of a top-mounted deck.
Do not overlook water resistance. A stated IP rating can be useful, but it is not permission to ride through standing water or pressure-wash the board. Water can reach bearings, connectors, battery enclosures and electronics. Wet leaves, painted lines and metal drain covers are slippery even on a board with good tyres.
Brakes, remote control and stability come first
Electric skateboard braking is regenerative: the motors slow the wheels and return some energy to the battery. It is powerful when set up well, but it is not magic. Braking performance changes with traction, speed, gradient, rider technique and battery state. On a fully charged battery, regenerative braking can be limited because there is less room to put energy back into the pack.
Your first rides should be in a quiet, open area. Learn how the remote responds, practise smooth acceleration and braking, and find the point where the board starts to turn under your feet. Start in the lowest ride mode. Fast mode does not make a new rider progress faster.
A helmet is the minimum. Wrist guards are especially worthwhile because hands instinctively go out in a fall, while knee and elbow protection add confidence as you build skill. Good footwear with a flat, supportive sole also gives you better board feel than loose trainers.
Buy support, not just a box
Price matters, but the cheapest board can become expensive if it has no spare parts, no repair route and no one able to diagnose a charging or drivetrain issue. Electric skateboards are wearable machines. Bearings, belts, tyres, tubes, bushings, grip tape, chargers and remote components all need attention eventually.
Before buying, check whether consumables are available, whether the brand supports replacement electronics, and whether there is a real service pathway if something goes wrong. This is particularly valuable for riders who use their board regularly rather than treating it as an occasional gadget.

A final check before you commit
The best board is rarely the fastest or the cheapest.
