ShredLights: Are They Worth It?

If you have ever outrun the reach of a cheap clip-on bike light on an electric skateboard, you already know why ShredLights keep coming up in rider conversations. They are not just there to make your board look sorted in the dark. For many riders, they are the difference between spotting rough tarmac early and finding it the hard way.

That said, lights are one of those upgrades that get oversimplified. Some riders treat them like a style accessory. Others expect them to turn night riding into daytime. Neither view is especially useful. If you ride electric skateboards, scooters or other compact PEVs, the real question is not whether lights are good. It is whether ShredLights solve the problems you actually have on the road or path better than the alternatives.

Rear visibility matters just as much. A lot of PEV riders focus on what they can see and forget how little they are seen. On a low-profile board, especially in dark clothing, you can disappear into traffic visually. A proper rear light setup makes your position clearer to anyone approaching from behind.

Choosing the right ShredLights setup

Not every rider needs the biggest or most expensive setup. The right answer depends on how and where you ride.

For commuting

A front and rear pairing is the baseline. You want enough output to read poor surfaces, but not so much that battery life becomes a problem if you ride daily. Reliability matters more than chasing max brightness on the spec sheet.

If your route includes mixed lighting, a stable front beam with a sensible spread is usually better than a super-focused spotlight effect. In urban riding, too narrow a beam can leave potholes and broken edges outside your line of sight.

For darker routes and faster riding

If you ride roads with poor lighting or spend time on faster boards, extra front output earns its keep. At higher speeds, your stopping distance and reaction time change quickly. What feels bright enough at 12 mph may not feel adequate at 25 mph on uneven ground.

That does not mean blindingly bright is always better. Overpowered lights can create harsh reflections on wet tarmac and make it harder to read texture. Beam quality and placement still matter.

For mixed PEV use

One reason riders stick with ShredLights is that the system can move across setups. If you own more than one board, or mix e-skate with another PEV, mount compatibility and easy removal become part of the value. A light that can be used across multiple machines is easier to justify than a single-purpose purchase.

The trade-offs riders should know about

This is where the conversation gets more useful. ShredLights are good kit, but they are not magic.

The first trade-off is cost. Compared with generic lights, they are a premium option. That premium makes sense if you value secure mounting, purpose-built fitment and better day-to-day usability. It makes less sense if you rarely ride after dark or just want a temporary backup light.

The second is expectations. Even a strong board light does not replace sensible route choice and speed control. Wet leaves, shiny drain covers, loose gravel and broken paving still bite. Lights help you see them earlier, not turn them into non-issues.

The third is mounting position. Because boards sit low, the beam can cast shadows differently from a bike light. That can actually help reveal surface texture, but it can also shorten your visual range if the setup is poorly angled. Good mounting is not a detail to ignore. It changes how useful the light really is.

Battery management is another practical point. If you are already charging a board remote, board battery and maybe your mobile phone, adding lights to the routine is not hard, but it is one more thing to stay on top of. Forget once, and you notice quickly.

Fitting ShredLights properly matters

A lot of lighting complaints come down to setup rather than the light itself. If the beam is aimed too high, you waste output and annoy other people. Too low, and you only light the patch directly ahead of the nose. On rough roads, that shortens your reaction window.

Take a bit of time to set the angle based on your normal riding stance and speed. Then test it on the sort of route you actually use, not just outside the house. Street-lit roads, wet surfaces and uneven pavement all reveal different weaknesses.

It is also worth checking mounts regularly, especially if you ride rough surfaces or kerbs. Vibration works on everything over time. A quick pre-ride check is far cheaper than replacing a lost light.

Are ShredLights better than generic alternatives?

For most serious electric skateboard riders, yes. Not because generic lights never work, but because they usually involve compromise. You can bodge a temporary setup onto almost anything. The question is whether you want to keep relying on a bodge for regular riding.

Purpose-built lights tend to win on repeatability. You fit them once, know where they sit, know how they charge, and trust them not to move about. That is especially important if you ride often rather than occasionally.

Where generic alternatives still have a place is budget-conscious entry-level use, backup lighting, or situations where you only need to be seen rather than properly illuminate the road. If your riding is short, slow and mostly under strong streetlights, the gap narrows.

But for riders who actually use their boards year-round, the difference in practicality is real. That is why brands with workshop experience and rider-led product selection keep backing proper lighting systems instead of pretending any cheap light will do the same job.

When ShredLights are worth the spend

They are worth it if you ride through darker months, commute regularly, or want a lighting setup you do not have to second-guess. They are also worth it if you are tired of mounts slipping, beams bouncing around, or lights that look bright on paper and underperform on the road.

If you only roll out in fair weather at midday, maybe not yet. Spend the money where it changes your ride more - tyres, bushings, brakes, servicing, or a battery health check. Lighting becomes a better investment when your usage actually demands it.

That is usually the right way to think about upgrades on any PEV. Buy the parts that solve a real riding problem, not the ones that just look convincing in a product photo.

Good lights do not make night riding risk-free, but they do make it more manageable, more predictable and far less fatiguing. If your board sees regular miles after dark, ShredLights are one of the few upgrades that earn their place every single ride.
